Students’ Union -Volunteer Awards 2011
Programme Representative Award Winners
Currently, there are approximately 600 Programme Reps at UEL. This year the Students' Union created the UELSU Programme Rep Award to recognise those Programme Reps who have been especially active this year. To qualify, Reps had to attend at least six different events/activities throughout the year, such as the three UELSU training sessions (Induction, Development Skills & Employability), the four General Meetings, the Learning & Teaching Open Space event, the Schools Restructuring consultation events, Programme Committee meetings and School Forum meetings.

"Dorothy has been an excellent student rep, and has always been extremely conscientious about representing her fellow students and to feedback to the Programme Committee the concerns and views of the students. Best Society Organiser
Law and Criminology – Gold
Femi Senu – “He has surely done a great job and has made a significant difference in Duncan House following the success of the Law and Criminology students Society. He not only managed to choose and set up an amazing executive team (despite of difficulties) but continually carried on giving birth to new better and better ideas as to the society. His enthusiastic is great and it’s priceless!” – Ivana Petkova
International Development – Silver
Caroline Dalton – “Caroline is very supportive and does her best to enable students to undertake additional work/attend events relevant to their studies. The effort and time Caroline has given in addition to her own workload is honourable.”- Alex Townsend-Drake.

Best New Society
Hellenic – Gold
They have done many and great things this year. One of the best being is the UEL Hellenic radio, and much more such as the Greek language courses which are going to start from September 2011 etc).
Law and Criminology – Silver
They have organised many helpful, interactive events also the revision groups they have started are doing great and has been very helpful for.
LGBT – Bronze
“The LGBT Society here at UEL recently won the National Union of Students Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Society Development Award for the most improved society in the country! They received the award at the NUS LGBT Conference in Sheffield which took place from the 6th to the 8th of May.” – Cameron Akitt
Best Event
Psychology – Gold
“The organising committee have worked tirelessly to make a difference to the student experience of students across UEL and have been formally recognised in Academic Review. An outstanding society!” – Chris Pawson
The Finance and Investment Society – Silver
The society organised an event with the local MP Stephen Timms. This event tuck 6 months in the organising, MP Timms, came to the university to talk to a small group of FIS members about their concerns about what is important to them. The event enabled students to talk about issues such as student’s fees, the local community, the Olympics and other topics.
Islamic Society – Bronze
“Charity week- raised way more than our target which was amazing (over £12500 for orphans worldwide- charity was Human Relief Foundation), also because all week not only students but the community all contributed generously and there was a talk and dinner at the end for those who wanted to learn about the importance of giving charity in Islam.
2) The annual dinner on 1st April, lots of people attended and the ISOC managed to coordinate well, there were plenty of volunteers and speaking to some of the visitors that night, and many enjoyed the evening. –“ Nabeela Sanaullah
Best Overall Society
Law & Criminology –Gold
Started with over 30 members in September last year. Now with over 190 members, making it the largest academic society. The society is run by a president, six vice presidents and members who are always there to volunteer themselves during our events. The society has held three outstanding events with over 100s in attendance during the academic year, as well as creating relationships with other societies and students of other disciplines.
International Development – Silver
A pro-active and engaging society whose efforts have attracted guest speakers from organisations and publications. They have organised and funded trips for students to attend conferences in Brussels and Florence, whilst supporting others with individual goals. Even at the close of the semester they have organised an event at the House of Lords with a high profile speaker. The society enables students to maximise their potential whilst providing a close group of peers who can all help each other. They deserve to be recognised.
Finance and Investment –Bronze
The FIS has worked hard to give their members the best opportunities over the last two. Last semester they did a work shop with CIMA, which lead to a sponsorship of £300, guaranteed events, one of which is a networking event that will involve CIMA inviting people from the business world to interact with the society’s members. They were also instrumental in the organisation of the London Stock Exchange trip. Their committee has worked hard to foster links with the Business School and staff in the Employability office so their members, as well as outside contacts, all in an effort to give the most to their members.
Community Volunteering Award Winners
All of these students have taken the time out to help the community in some way or another from 2010; some have also worked on specific projects such as – “My Saturday” a group of students gave up their Saturday as part of the Project, to help paint part of the 1 a etc community centre. The Saturday project also saw students giving a helping hand in the local community at the Thornton Road Allotments. A patch needed to be cleared so that the residents could start using the allotments.
