► December 8th General Meeting

On Wednesday 8th December, the Students' Union held a General Meeting as a result of receiving over 100 signatures from students requesting such a meeting to be organised on the topics of fees, funding and cuts at UEL.

The two motions below were discussed and passed unanimously by just over 100 students, however the meeting did not have enough students present to be considered 'quorate'.

As a result, the Students' Union has decided to take these motions as a strong indication from students on what they wish the Students' Union to be doing to support its members.

Motion 1

UELSU resolves
• To support the demands of the occupation, UEL should refuse to implement cuts and tuition fee rises
• To stand in solidarity with UEL employees facing redundancy
• To support, both practically and politically, any industrial action taken by UEL staff facing cuts or deterioration in working conditions
• To work with the staff unions to fight the planned cuts – bring staff and students together.
• We recognise that UEL is part of the local community and that cuts in jobs and services impacts on all of us.

Motion 2

UELSU resolves
• To use the block grant that should have been used to fund the sabbatical officers to fund student campaigns
• That the Student’s Union should call two General Meetings next term in order to allow students to democratically decide how these funds are distributed
• The first of these General Meetings should be in the first two weeks of the new term
