► FAQs

Below are a few commonly asked questions about Societies

My group ran last year, do I need to register it again?
Yes, because each year we have different students, and it is a condition of our constitution that each group has 10 current students

How can I register a new society?
You can, and you should. For details about starting a new society click HERE or contact us using the details at the bottom of this page.

Do I have to re-join?
Yes, and the money you paid last year, if it wasnt spent by yourselves, is still there for you this year

What if I’m new and I don’t know anyone? How will I get people to join my group?
Well, come to the Student Union and tell us what you’re into! Then we'll get similar students together so they can meet each other and get going!

What if I don’t get enough members on time?
The reason we set a deadline is so we can accurately predict the expenses for each group. If you really can’t get both the form and 10 members to us by the deadline, you won’t be officially set up. However, as soon as you do complete these, we will help you in anyway we can.

How much does it cost to join?
Each society will set its own  fee to reflect what its plans for the year are. It will range between £2 and £10

Can anyone join?
YES. Absolutely anyone can join any society, at any time but we insist on a minimum of 10 STUDENTS. Non students can join, and we insist they do if they participate regularly and pay associate membership fee of a mimimun of £5.

What is the maximum number of members we can have?
There isn’t a maximum!

Is there a joining deadline?
No. Anyone can join any activity at any time. The earlier your members join up to a minimum of 10 students or more, the more likely you are you get extra-funding for your activity.

What goes on in the Holidays?
That depends on you! If you want to carry on, fine, just let us, and your members know.

Money

How much money do we get?
Each society recieves money from the students union, which is in addition to money raised themselves through membership, fundraising etc. For the year 2010/11 all societies will get £2 funding for every £1 raised by the society till the 23 of January 2012. Society money raised can come from any avenue which will include membership fees, gate entries charged for events, sales of society crested products, fundraising events etc. Please see below of how this would work out.

Examples 1:
Computer games have £40 which works out 20 members paid £2. Union will give them £80. This means they have £120 to spend for their activities.
Example 2:
SNS has only 10 members who pay £10 each. This equals £100 and union will give them £200. Total amount for spending on activities = £300.

How do I know that the money from my activity is being spent correctly?
Every single penny spent through a Society, from photocpying to ordering goods, has to go through a standard procedure. We ensure this however you can always ask for a copy of the account from the SCAC.

Events on Campus

Can I book  the Bar for an activity OR event?
Yes. You need to complete a bar booking form to let us know what you want to do and when. Please note, nights are at a premium and split between the clubs and societies, so this will be on first come first serve basics and will have to appeal to many students. There is no garantee but we will try.

Can we set up an information stall on campus?
Yes. However we have to seek permission from the university, so make sure you come and ask at least TWO WEEKS before you want it!
