MY MANIFESTO FOR EDUCATION OFFICER

I am a current Programme Representative at the University of East London, school of Business and Law. Also, I’ve just been successfully elected as an NUS delegate for this year’s National Union Student’s conference last week. Thank you for your votes. With my past and present experience, I have keenly developed good rapport and understanding with students, knowing their needs and concerns. WHY SHOULD I BE EDUCATIONAL OFFICER?

ENSURE EQUITY ACROSS UEL

  • Work with the university to implement best adjustments process in favour of all students in line with UEL’s vision 2028 plan.
  • Work with the Centre for Students success to organise skills acquisition and employability workshops to prepare us for future job roles.
  • Work with Career Centres to increase support for placements, and study abroad programme and (equal access to placements outside of Europe, increased wellbeing support)
  • Work with the Compliance Team to develop better support to international students regarding visa sponsorship after graduation.
  • Ensure accessibility of hardship fund to international students who desperately need them.

BETTERING THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

  • Push for continued improvements of the VLE making it more coherent, consistent, accessible, and beneficial to UEL students experience.
  • Continue working on the experience of joint-honours students, particularly focusing on practical module selection and communication between staff and students.
  • Work with the university to change the policies of international students with placement courses paying more tuition fees than students who are not on placement courses.
  • Work with the student hub to ensure early and stable updates of timetables and modules for new and returning students, as this has made students missed their classes because of the unstable timetable. This has affected student’s attendance.

NATIONAL CAMPAIGNS

  • Continue to campaign against the detrimental Teaching for Excellence Framework, which links the value of our degree to develop the skills and competencies sought by employers and entrepreneurs in a rapidly changing world.
  • Provide students with training and knowledge on how to fight the changes to the HE sectors, collaborating with national activist networks.
  • Ensure BAME attainment gap and voices are kept at the forefront and the university addressing it accordingly.
  • Work with course representative and tutors to shape education, developing agreements within departments to adopt a better way of learning and teaching within their practice.
  • Diversify assessment, pushing for the introduction of an interdisciplinary, credited module across departments.
  • Ensure accessibility of all needed resources to PHD students and implement a complaints process should they have problems with their supervisors.
  • Ensure all PGT students have a named Academic Advisor and follow up their progress.
  • Work with the Graduate School to organise Researcher Development programme like creative writing workshops for PhD students who are at the write ups stage of their thesis.

As your Education Officer, the interest of all UEL students are the HEART of my responsibility and duty. I will ensure an excellent performance and representation.
