Ismail Mohammed

Hello!

I am Ismail Mohammed, and I am currently serving my term as the President of the Students' Union. I am requesting you to elect me as your Education Officer so I can continue to serve you.

If you elect me as your Education Officer, I will:

Improve the quality of our students’ University experience

  • Free Printing: Lobby the University to give print credits to students on each term.
  • Ipad: Lobby the University to relaunch the initiative that allowed our students to have an Ipad so they will have more convenient access to Kortext.
  • Timetabling: Ensure the timetabling fiasco doesn’t happen again. If it does, I will occupy the office of the Vice-Chancellor and her team in protest (I will invite you to join me).

Improve the quality of Education

  • Mental Wealth Module: Lead a comprehensive review of the Mental Wealth module to ensure what the University promised our students is delivered.
  • Quality of lectures: provide additional training and support to lecturers so they will be able to provide lecturers that our students enjoy and find productive.
  • Placement Year Fees: Many of our students are being charged an extortionate amount of money – in some cases as high as £5,000 – for a placement year! I will vehemently campaign against this injustice and ensure the fees are brought down to a reasonable amount, and the students are given the opportunity to pay it in instalments.

Celebrate our diversity

  • Decolonise our curriculum: Incorporate into our curriculum the works and achievements of talents from different ethnic and national backgrounds so our students will have a more vibrant learning journey and fulfilling experience.
  • BAME attainment gap (degree awarding gap): Provide necessary support to students from ethnic minority backgrounds and narrow the unexpectable BAME attainment gap.
  • More ethnic minority professors and lecturers at UEL: I will lead a campaign to increase diversity among our staff population so our students can have a better learning experience…

An independent Students’ Union led by the students:

  • I will continue the hard work: I will continue to strive relentlessly to ensure the Students’ Union is able to function independently without undue influence and represent the true views and concerns of our students.
  • Improve the culture: There is an urgent need to improve the culture and the environment that exists in the Students’ Union. I will work with other student representatives to ensure the Students’ Union can function in a ‘fair’ and ‘democratic’ manner.
  • Appreciate our staff so we can provide a better service to our students: I will campaign for better pay and working conditions for our staff so we can provide more effective services to our students.

What I did for you as the President of the Students’ Union:

I represented you:

  • I have passionately and fearlessly served you and fought tirelessly to uphold and enhance your interests.
  • I have individually interacted with many students who needed support and made sure they received the necessary support.
  • I have been an exuberant Student Governor; I have provided strong and unique perspectives to the Governors, ensuring they understand the challenges our students face.
  • I have represented our students in multiple regional and national events.

I lobbied the University on your behalf:

  • I have relentlessly pressed the University to provide you with the best possible service. This has led to the University review the way it provides services to our students.
  • I have challenged the University in their lack of preparedness in delivering the Mental Wealth Module.
  • I have intensely lobbied the University to solve the endlessly occurring timetabling crisis urgently.

I campaigned for you:

  • I led a campaign to increase the number of our students registered to vote in the general election so our students can exercise their democratic right and decide whom they want to be represented by in Parliament.
  • I led the campaign against the debilitating proposal that aimed to change Articles of Association which was put to a referendum.
  • I had demonstrated real courage and integrity when I successfully led the drive for the Students’ Union to come out in support of our teachers’ strike and their legitimate struggle for fair pay and better working conditions.
